Preserve

(See also: Preserve (Orison))

A preserve spell enables the caster to retain some item fresh and whole until some later time when it is needed. Of course, the dweomer is ineffective in retaining the magical potency living component materials such as mistletoe, holly berries, and similar stuffs that must be gathered at specific times or under specific conditions. It is likewise ineffective in preserving the deceased for later resurrection. The material that can be treated by a preserve spell depends upon the level of the caster.

2nd level: Hard, relatively dry material

5th level: Soft, relatively wet material

8th level: Semi-liquid and liquid material

A container is necessary only when a relatively high degree of moisture is concerned.

The material components of the spell are a pinch of dust, a bit of resin (or amber), and a drop of brandy.

Notes: Uncommon for transmuters and alchemists from the World of Greyhawk setting; otherwise, rare. (Originally published in Unearthed Arcana.)
